    Antarctic meteorite descriptions, 1980

Specimens found in the Alan Hills area include 361 ordinary chondrites, 4 carbonaceous chondrites, 6 achondrites, and 2 irons. Thirteen specimens measured over 11 cm in diameter and 69 between 5 to 10 cm in diameter are reported. The remainder of the finds were small, and many were paired. One of the irons was estimated to weigh about 20 kilograms

HIEN-LO: An experiment for charge determination of cosmic rays of interplanetary and solar origin

    Get PDF
The experiment is designed to measure the heavy ion environment at low altitude (HIEN-LO) in the energy range 0.3 to 100 MeV/nucleon. In order to cover this wide energy range a complement of three sensors is used. A large area ion drift chamber and a time-of-flight telescope are used to determine the mass and energy of the incoming cosmic rays. A third omnidirectional counter serves as a proton monitor. The analysis of mass, energy and incoming direction in combination with the directional geomagnetic cut-off allows the determination of the ionic charge of the cosmic rays. The ionic charge in this energy range is of particular interest because it provides clues to the origin of these particles and to the plasma conditions at the acceleration site. The experiment is expected to be flown in 1988/1989

Temporal variations of the anomalous oxygen component, 1977 - 1984

    Get PDF
A survey is of the long term temporal variations of 6.6 to 12 MeV/nucleon anomalous oxygen at 1 AU covering the period 1977 to 1984. This time interval included the recent solar maximum, with the recovery at neutron monitor energies beginning in 1982. During this time interval, 6.6 to 12 MeV/nucleon 0 fluxes decreased by at least a factor of 50, and indeed remained below the instrumental detection threshold after 1979. By late 1984, neutron monitors had recovered to roughly 1979 levels from the 1982 solar maximum, and anomalous O still remained below the detection threshold

MEASURING PROPULSIVE FORCE WITHIN THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF BACKSTROKE SWIMMING

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to identify the propulsive force profile associated within the different phases of backstroke to provide individual feedback to elite swimmers and coaches. Elite backstrokers (n=4) performed three maximal velocity time trials to determine the swimmers maximum velocity. This was followed by three passive drag trials and three active drag trials using a flux vector drive dynamometer mounted on a force platform to tow them at set velocities (derived from the swimmer’s maximum swim pace) while measuring the force to do so. The computed active drag and the propulsive propelling force profile were represented as a dynamic parameter, allowing identification of intra cyclic force fluctuations with respect to time. The force profiles were synchronised to video footage which provided unique quantitative and individual stroke kinematic feedback to the elite swimmers and coaches

The heavy ion compositional signature in 3He-rich solar particle events

    Get PDF
A survey of the approx. 1 MeV/nucleon heavy ion abundances in 66 He3-rich solar particle events was performed using the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland and Goddard Space Flight Center instruments on the ISEE-3 spacecraft. The observations were carried out in interplanetary space over the period 1978 October through 1982 June. Earlier observations were confirmed which show an enrichment of heavy ions in HE3-rich events, relative to the average solar energetic particle composition in large particle events. For the survey near 1.5 MeV/nucleon the enrichments compared to large solar particle events are approximately He4:C:O:Ne:Mg:Si:Fe = 0.44:0.66:1.:3.4:3.5:4.1:9.6. Surprising new results emerging from the present broad survey are that the heavy ion enrichment pattern is the same within a factor of approx. 2 for almost all cases, and the degree of heavy ion enrichment is uncorrelated with the He3 enrichment. Overall, the features established appear to be best explained by an acceleration mechanism in which the He3 enrichment process is not responsible for the heavy ion enrichment, but rather the heavy ion enrichment is a measure of the ambient coronal composition at the sites where the He3-rich events occur

Arm cavity resonant sideband control for laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors

We present a new optical control scheme for a laser interferometric gravitational wave detector that has a high degree of tolerance to interferometer spatial distortions and noise on the input light. The scheme involves resonating the rf sidebands in an interferometer arm cavity

Defendant\u27s Brief in Opposition to Plaintiff\u27s Motion to Exclude Testimony of Pastor Ernie Sanders

    Get PDF
The State asserts that the testimony of Ernie Sanders is admissible. Ernie Sanders was pastor to Richard Eberling and Jack Fisher at the Orient Correctional Institution. That fact does not render every communication between them privileged. Sanders testified at deposition that he learned from Eberling and Fisher that fellow inmate Robert Parks was trying to beat a confession out of him [Eberling] to the Marilyn Sheppard murder (deposition of Sanders, p. 22). Sanders also observed bruises on Eberling. Sanders learned from Jack Fisher that Parks beat Eberling prior to Eberling\u27s death and that Sam Sheppard admitted to Fisher that he murdered Marilyn Sheppard (deposition of Sanders, p. 28, 32). The substance of conversations unrelated to religious counseling and matters observed by Sanders on a visit are not privileged and Sanders may testify
